Universities shape their social, cultural, and economic surroundings and act as engines of civil development. For the 40th anniversary of the University of Wuppertal, Kuball’s permanent light installation on the university’s complex visualizes fundamental aspects of the integration of the college and its location. Like a castle, the functional concrete architecture is enthroned above the city and becomes a carrier of an abstract symbol system of vertical and horizontal stripes of light which sporadically form right angles, in a search for dialogue with its surroundings. With 6,000 possible variations and numerous perspectives the illuminated messages are subject to constant evolution and alteration, similar to language and cultural systems. The significance of the university as a place of knowledge, research, and modern technologies is also underpinned by the green electricity powering the installation from regional wind turbines. (JO)
